Tips for Back to School Visits

As a longtime Mount Kisco, NY dentist, we know that September can mean back to school for so many children…and it is not always an easy undertaking for the parents. So much to organize, learn and go with all at once- so why add your child’s oral health to that list?! Schedule a visit with us ahead of time to make sure your child heads back with a bright, healthy smile they can be proud to show off on picture day.

We know that not every child, or parent for that matter, may be ecstatic about coming to see their dentist either. With that in mind, we have compiled a few tips below that may help your child’s back to school visit be the best one yet!

  • Be mindful of appointment times. We find that if young children visit us during their normal nap hours, or older children at the end of a long day, they may be even less enthused. Spring break and early September are usually a heavy volume for us, so make sure to book your appointment well ahead of time for a time slot that makes sense for the entire family.
  • We never suggest a child eats directly after their cleaning and exam. Give them a small snack ahead of time that can hold them over for a few hours. Avoid large meals so that we can avoid gagging, and make sure they brush before coming in too!
  • If you have an older child, try to see if they will go first to set the example for the younger ones. Sometimes there is nothing like seeing an older sibling be brave and letting that trickle down. This goes for you, the parent, too. If you have some fear or anxiety about the dentist office, try to not let it show to your child. Instead, encourage them to ask questions and become more familiar with our staff to avoid anxiety or fear as they grow older.
